What is happening to the Local Housing Allowance in April 2024?

Local Housing Allowance (LHA) is used to work out how much people who rent from a private landlord can claim if they are claiming Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.

The maximum rent is based on:

  • Where you live

  • The number of bedrooms you need

  • The rent amounts for the area

  • Your age

Could I be eligible for help towards my housing costs?

You might be able to get extra money to help you pay your rent. Many people miss out on benefits they’re entitled to. 

You might be able to get Universal Credit for housing costs if:

  • You’re on a low income - dependent on circumstances

  • You have savings below £16,000

  • You rent a home

  • You live in the UK

In some situations you may need to claim Housing Benefit instead of Universal Credit. If:

  • You, and your partner if applicable, have reached State pension age

  • You live in temporary accommodation

  • Your landlord is a county council, registered charity, voluntary organisation or housing association and they give you care and support

How many bedrooms do you need?

You’re allowed one bedroom for:

  • Every adult couple

  • Any other adult 16+

  • Any two children (regardless of gender) under 10

  • Any two children (of the same gender) up to 15

  • Any other child

Some exceptions are made if there is an adult or child who requires their own bedroom due to severe disabilities, or a non-live in carer needs to provide overnight care. 

How much would I get towards my rent? 

There are two rates for Wigan and the amount that you receive will be based on where you live. If your postcode begins with WN4 or WN5, your claim may be worked out using the weekly rate for the St Helens area.

If the cost of the rent is more than the LHA, then you will need to pay the difference to the landlord.
